You can basically just flip a switch to change the resolution a game renders at, it doesn't take much at all. As long as the GUI is designed in such a way that it's not absolutely horrific at a lower/higher resolution. Like how Emulators on PC can play n64/ps1 games at 1080p, they didn't have to go through every game making changes in the emulation, they just tell it what resolution to render at and bam, it's done.

But yeah Neo releasing a year early, less powerful but also much cheaper too would definitely put it in a strong position, but again I'm very doubtful it will come this year.

Ahhh I see. Hmmm would there be a big difference beween native 4k and upscaled 4k? In terms of visuals?

Thats what i am wondering too. My guess is that there shold be a tangible difference. We can see a differemce between native 1080p and 900p upscaled to  1080p. And the difference between 900p and 1080p is just around a 50% bump in pixels. The difference between 1080p and 4k is around a 4 times bump in pixel count.

But sony probably has test units testing just this, do they feel that with whatever upscaling tech they are using it will be a enough to make it just as good or passable? Cause unless they see no value in putting native 4k level hardware into a box then i see no reason why they will be set on doing what they are seemingly doimg now.

Hopefully someone with more tech knowledge can shed some light on this.
