Mmmm depends on how good the upscaler is and what native resolution it is upscaling from, native 4k will always look better of course but decently upscaled the difference wouldn't be massive. Rendering the game at 1440p then upscaling it to 4k will look a little better then Rendering at 1080p and upscaling to 4k also but would require more power.
You'll be able to notice the difference if you have a very large tv, like you need a very large TV to really get an advanatage from the jump between 1080p and 4k anyway. Anything less than 55 inch and you probably might as well get a 1080p TV unless you're sitting relatively close.
