So, I was just reading a Neogaf thread, and it has led me to some interesting thoughts.

What they've observed is that there are all sorts of references that seem to imply the game being in various timelines. It's like there's an overlap between the timelines.

For instance, there's a bridge from Twilight Princess. There's something seen floating in the sky that could be anything from Sky City from Twilight Princess, to Skyloft from Skyward Sword, to something else (heck, there was something in Minish Cap). There's the Hylia statue from Skyward Sword. The Old Man seems to refer to the Old Man that gives you your sword in the original LoZ. The resting place of the Master Sword strongly resembles its location in Link to the Past. The Temple of Time looks physically a lot like the one in OoT.

The castle in the distance, surrounded by that "Calamity Ganon" thing, looks almost identical to the Hyrule Castle of Twilight Princess.

There's too many of these things, it just makes me wonder - how can they possibly make them fit into any timeline?

Which is what led me to realise something. One game has already achieved such a thing - a game that has elements of many Zelda games, that has a storyline that branches across multiple timelines.

That's right - Hyrule Warriors Legends. Aonuma has specifically describes Hyrule Warriors' story as occurring in a separate dimension, but linking to the other titles. He describes it as "it doesn't exist as part of the main canon", but then compares it to the Avengers as opposed to the separate storylines of Marvel characters.

What if BotW is basically the elements of the various timelines essentially merging together at the end, as a result of the events of Hyrule Warriors Legends? Note that I'm not suggesting that Cia/Lana will appear, or that other characters from other games will be carried into this one in any way. What I'm suggesting is that the events of HWL have resulted in Calamity Ganon's rise in all three timelines, and the timelines merging.
