As for divided society, any thoughts on whether people tend to move to places that match their world view? Then they just end up living in bubbles.
For example, I'd be interested in knowing how many conservatives happily move to California or NYC each year. Or how many lefties move to the southern states?
Another part of this is gerrymandering. If you make it so that your district is guaranteed to be Democrat, for example, then the people running don't need to appeal to the broader electorate, they only need to appeal to the Democrat base, resulting in more extreme candidates.
