It caught my attention through the Steam Forum that these particular issue is affecting several users:

Battleborn is recording hours played even when game is not on

Okay, so. I went to sleep. I wake up to see Battleborn have 8 more hours played. It's at 116 hours when I woke up. Last time I played, the hours were at 108 hours played. Steam was offline, I checked it through mobile, so nobody accessed my steam account and I don't family share. Basically, it keeps clocking in hours even when I'm playing another game, hell, even when I'm offline and the computers off. Now it's at 130 hours and I haven't played since.
Some others are having this same issue as well. What's going on?

As I glanced over the webpage funnyjunk, there was a twitter post where someone stated it is made in order to avoid getting a refund through Steam and make the game more popular than it is.

This is all non-conclusive and there's not much to state a case, but considering Gearbox's rocky history now, this might actually be true?
