CD PROJEKT TRADEMARKS GWENT: THE WITCHER CARD GAME

When CD Projekt announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would include a Hearthstone-style game-within-a-game called Gwent, two thoughts immediately leapt to my mind: First, that "Gwent” is a terrible name for a game, and second, that it would be a quickly-forgettable Witcher mini-game, like dice poker or drunken fistfighting. I was right on the first count, but as to the second part, well, not so much. The game-within-a-game became a hit-within-a-hit, and now it looks like CD Projekt is going to spin it off into a stand-alone release.

When we first learned about Tokyo 42 back in March, it wasn't perfectly clear what it was all about. The developers called it "an action game inspired by Syndicate and GTA1," while we opted to describe it more pithily (but not necessarily more informatively) as "like shooting up a Where's Wally scene to cracking electronica." Fortunately, the 12-minute alpha gameplay trailer released today goes a long way toward clarifying the situation, and it looks really good—and a lot more sophisticated than you might expect.

 

RUMOR: HALO 5 IS COMING TO THE PC (UPDATE: NO, IT'S NOT)

Update: We reached out to a Microsoft spokesperson, who denied that Halo 5 will ever come to PC. "Our approach is to deliver epic Halo experiences designed for PC gamers and Windows 10, such as Halo Wars 2 and the recently announced Halo 5: Forge. There are no plans to port Halo 5: Guardians to PC.”

 

THE STATS DON’T LIE, LUCIO IS OVERWATCH’S MOST VALUABLE HERO

Overwatch keeps a detailed record of your in-game stats—sorting kills, damage, healing, and lots more by hero. But what’s the point of knowing your stats if you can’t rub your superior McCree winrate in the faces of your friends? Since face-rubbing functionality isn’t built into the game, stat-tracking website Master Overwatch has emerged to fill that role. And according to the site, everybody's favorite beat-dropping DJ, Lucio, is among the top three heroes in the game for popularity, winrate, and score-per-minute.

 

MINECRAFT'S LATEST UPDATE BRINGS NEW FOES AND MORE

Mojang has announced its latest Minecraft update, which ushers in a bunch of adjustments and additions to its ice and desert biomes. Update 1.10 brings new polar bears to the former and a meaner, stronger variety of zombie to the latter, meaning there are more ways to die in your blocky procedural world.
