It doesn't matter the whole world of benefits that would bring having to be connected in order to play a 1999 game. It's the fact that no other Final Fantasy requires it and it still features character boosters and cloud server saving; just not on Square-Enix servers.

So, yeah, I'd call that crippling. They didn't enforce this crap in any other Final Fantasy game on Steam because they know how bad it is.
