I hope for Microsoft sake that this is them getting rid of the console cycle and this is more or less their "next gen" system which will slowly start to get its on exclusives and be forward compatible with whatever they release in the 2020s. 

For sony at least it definitely appears from the rumours like Neo is just a mid-gen upgraded SKU ala N3DS. Nothing intending to replace thePS4.

Sony spoke of it last year, months and months before the rumours hit. MS clearly got wind of the de kits going out and felt they had to say something themselves.
