It also wasn't free for 4 years. See the thing is. Overwatch does have a internal story. That the creators made up, for each character, map etc. Certain characters have dialogs with each other. Certain maps make characters comment on them. So they do have stuff in place. Yeah, I agree. Overwatch is missing important full stuff. But, the designing phase of the game was a lot more complicated. Then what TF2 did. Being originally an addition to the Orange box. I see the game now, as a pilot episode to a show. Hopefully, once they start adding in more stuff. Will get the visual backstories. But yes. Doing it like this, is not a good idea. Because Street FIghter 5 has messed up their sales. Because of missing things.

Overwatch doesn't have a story, there is no story in the game, there are no animated cutscenes, there are no backstory tidbits or universe lore or conversations that take place between characters.
You need to look for that outside of the game.

The animated shorts are outside the game. That is stupid, yes. And needs to be inside the game.

But wtf. Do you not hear when certain characters talk to each other? I can easily tell you a few things about Zarya from the small bits of dialog. Zarya has a bad past with robots. So she hates Bastion. Robots are most likley the ones who attacked Russia. She has a friendship with Reinhardt and Mei. And has a comment about how the people, in Numbani are stupid to follow a certain political group. Also, look at Volskya Industries. She has a massive ad poster at point A. She's used as "I want you" poster, for motivation.

Other maps have posters. Luccio's music ads are on a few maps. Things like that. The mobile control trucks have tidbits for D'va and Tracer. Those type of things are in the game. Just blast the locker doors open.

Microtransactions do not belong in a full priced game that isn't even feature complete. It's a money grab.

This is one of the farest Microtransaction systems, for a game. It's the same like GTA V's. You might as well bitch at GTA too. Both games you can unlock everything, on your own. Their MT's are litterly only for people who are freaking lazy/rich/have no time. This is not Capcom on-disc type of bullshit. Or day 1 DLC.
