Yeah, thats a design choice. You can say the developer is bad if you want. But to expect gorgeous graphics from an indie game is to set yourself up for disappointment imo. |
I don't expect Crysis here. I just expect a competent execution of whatever style they choose. They clear as day didn't have the resources or frankly the talent to do a full 3D model style. It would have been wiser to go with a style they could execute well. And that's on Inafune, a man with the experience to know better.
When a solo developed indie can look like this: http://www.hardcoregamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/DustAETReviewImage3.jpg
And a game with $25k can look like this: http://techraptor.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/WiiU_FreedomPlanet_Screenshot_03.png
There is no excuse for a 4mil project to look like THIS: http://operationrainfall.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/mighty-no-9-freeze.png with flat textures and bland lighting and simplistic models. And if they never planned a hand-drawn 2D style, they shouldn't have built their kick starter on art of that style.
And we need to hold indies to some standard on all fronts or they'll never *go* anywhere.
