First off, I am a Canadian. Secondly, this is what happens when an overwhelming majority of a country's electorate is socialist and everybody puts their trust in government to run their lives. The ruling leftist party in Canada wields so much influence among the media, the education system and the ruling class that they could probably dissolve parliament altogether and there wouldn't be much of an uprising at this point. Freedom of speech is severely wounded in Canada because kangaroo courts enforce political correctness as rule of law. This is all wonderful when governments are handing out fat cheques and being everybody's friend, but what happens when the government finally runs out of money and has to start turning on the people to sustain itself? Do you think that government is going to give back all those nice democratic institutions that it has kindly taken control of and let itself be voted out of power? fat chance, it'll be more likely to send the military in to squash any opposition.
What people need to understand is that government is no different than any greedy corporation: the only thing it wants is power and the more power you give it over you the less likely you are to get it back when it stops being your friend. Americans, do not move to Canada because we are screwed. When governments run out of money, it is going to get nasty up here. Just be smart and don't let the socialists take over your country, as well.
