While i really like Alan Wake graphics quality overall is a bit mixed with sometimes really mediocre animations, partially not so pretty assets...
Animation quality is important for me, with Mirrors Edge still being one of the most immersive first person games in my opinion.
Art design is something subjective. Let's pick Mirrors Edge again, i love that look, some people hate it.
Then there's the technical side. Like resolution, anti aliasing, lighting, texture quality and all that. Mirrors Edge was one of the better games in 2008, not anymore that much impressive in 360's late live. Deus Ex was pretty disappointing here but had a great design.
All that together makes the graphics experience. So Crysis 2 and 3 for example, while still being technically impressive for the old hardware, maybe not having the best but good animations, are both a bit disappointing in the design part.
