Yes maybe they should have because you know in the 40s every person had access to the internet to be able to make a sound decision because there was readily available comparission tables of millitary strengths between coutries. 

The leaders and people know United States if a force to be rekon. I believe even one of the Japanese leaders said we just woke the sleeping giant when they bomb pearl harbor. And thanks to us dropping the A bomb, Japan stopped for sure and a lot of countries backed off us as well.
