And beyond those involved in such movements, there's also the vast majority of muslims in western nations, who are simply living their life in a manner that is simultaneously Islamic and fully integrated into regular society.

By "modernise", I mean take it out of their equivalent of the "Middle Ages" of Christianity, and into modern views on things like sexuality and gender roles, freedom of religion and speech, etc. Things that you and I take for granted, but which swathes of muslims in a variety of islamic nations are calling for.
