Mario Kart wasn't any sort of counter to GTAIV or it would have seen better sales, as well as it performed.
During the NA release of MK, we saw greater hardware sales for the Wii over the PS3 and 360 combined, yet GTAIV on the 360 alone has outsold combined WW sales of MK, despite being available for weeks prior in both Japan and Others.
For Week 1 NA sales, GTAIV 360 almost doubled NA sales for MK.
It was simply the availability of more consoles in NA that led to the increase in sales as most people who have been tracking Wii sales have been saying all along.
From a strategic standpoint, it would make sense for Nintendo to fill NA distribution channels prior to the release of Wii Fit in preparation, rather than ride with the assumption that everyone will simply be able to pick up both a Wii and Wii Fit on the 21st at the same time for $340.
