Nintendo isn't looking at their mobile games as "small games." That kind of attitude would be absolutely terrible for the goal of exposing their products and IP, because that attitude would make for really forgetable products.

They are making "big games" for mobile. What they are not making are traditional style games. That doesn't mean they are small. It means that they are more suited for mobile space. Puzzles and Dragons isn't a "small game." Hearthstone isn't a "small game." Expect stuff like that.

Hell, Miitomo is garbage right now in terms of quality, but that is clearly not a "small" app. I think people should look at Nintendo's mobile initiative the way they look at Nintendo's endeavors into movies and themeparks, because that's a far more accurate comparison than the conclusion many people have come to. Saying it's just advertizement isn't really accurate, but calling it their core business is also inaccurate. The point is to make high quality products that become supplementary to their core dedicated gaming business by saturating mindshare with far more positive consumer interations with their IP than their gaming systems can provide by themselves.

I know people like to shoot the piss at mobile here, but people play these games because they're good, not because they're stupid. They'll see through a poor effort, or as Miitomo proves poor quality, and they'll stop playing. Nintendo knows that. They're treating mobile the way the most successful mobile companies in the world are treating mobile, because doing anything less would produce an end product that would severely damage their IP.

I'm not saying Ninten is not taking mobile serious. I feel the opposite actually. It looks like they are, considering miitomo is a means to collect points for My Nintendo as well. I think Ninten is making the mobile space an intergral part of their strategy to get people more invested in them. I figure FE and AC will do the same in some sort of way. I don't mean they're games are small, but smaller scale, something easy that everyone can get into, but also become very invested in, like how Miitomo is simple, but easy to stay invested in. That's not a bad thing. They're not going to be large like console games. Those are likely to be kept on consoles, while the mobile games are either smaller scale versions, or just different ideas that take advantage of mobile devices. That's how I see it at least.
