Don't get me wrong, Some of the Vita support was pretty good by Sony.

I think they made some bad bets by getting behind Borderlands 2 and Resident Evil Revelations 2 on Vita. Instead of funding those, why not fund a Gran Turismo 6 port?

Those PS2 ports are nice, but not much boast about given performance issues (Jak and Daxter Colelction is garbage nearing unplayable). A lot of the indie stuff is underhwleming. Some of the library was Sony trying to find an answer to losing Monster Hunter.

Frankly, if the Vita just had a few more marquee titles and if they did a better job on PS2 ports it would be easier to recommend a Vita.

I agree. It's a shame that the survey asking if people were interested in Gran Turismo Vita never materialized in an actual game. I also agree that Sony could've funded more 3rd party games. If not AAA then AA games like Daxter on PSP that sold 4.2 mill.

I guess they realized pretty quickly that the growing popularity of smartphone gaming (with its free games) made it impossible to make profits on handheld games without franchises like Pokémon, Super Mario, Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing and Yokai Watch. Even the 3DS that HAD those 5 franchises hardly made a profit for Nintendo.

This is pretty much it. The market completely vanished in barely a generation.

Sony realised in the first year when the likes of uncharted, little big planet, and so forth weren't shifting in volume (along with need for speed, Assassins Creed etc as big third party titles) that it was a no go.

The only reason tearaway and killzone mercenary made it out in 2013 was they were too fast along to cancel.

The difference between Nintendo and Sony with this was Sony cut their losses instantly while Nintendo threw everything at the 3DS. It doesn't look like Sony ever sold the Vita at a loss, and they have shifted an awful lot of software per system, and lots of 3rd party theyve had no investment in meaning its been pure revenue for them. It really would be interesting to see which how close Vita's profit has been to Nintendo's. Not taking a loss on hardware, not funding software, very limited marketing and memory cards etc mean it might not have been the absolute failure to sony that many view it to be.
