Thanks naznatips.

So here's the third question. Why is it that SE didn't have anything ready for an earlier release on the PS3? It's not like they had any way to know it would be struggling like this so early in it's lifespan.

The issue is the development time required to make a quality PS3 game.  The last article I read from a developer perspective said that it takes even the best teams 3 years minimum to make a good to great PS3 game.  The dev kits have only been available for 3rd parties for a little over 2, so it's no surprise that companies like Square Enix who pride themselves on quality in their games are not rushing them.  The good PS3 games are next year for a reason.  That's the fastest they could get them out while spending the time and effort to make them great games.

Unfortunately, because of the long development times required for PS3 games (as opposed to a year for a good Wii game or 2 for a good 360 game, which can be ported to the PS3 after production) it will likely not have all that many titles on the system.  Of course, that can be seen as a good thing or a bad thing.  It's a good thing that developers are taking the time necessary to make great games, but it's a bad thing in that there will be long periods of time between these great games.

Still, the truly amazing titles aren't going to be rushed.  Most of the games comming out this year were rushed to keep the PS3 from experiencing a game drought.  Really, the PS3 would have been in a much better position  if they had waited till Christmas 07 to release it.  They would have been able to sell the system cheaper, have a much more robust launch library, and the big titles wouldn't seem so distant.  Good games are worth waiting for though.  That's why I have never complained once when Nintendo has pushed back a game.  I'd rather have devs take their time and make it perfect.
