Windows 7 is running slow on my friend's PC. Any good alternative?

I'm just surprised that it ran Windows XP great with 500 MB ram, but lags even when just browsing folders on Windows 7 with 1,5 gig. Something with similar system requirements to XP would probably work fine.

Open Task Manager - Performance tab - and check the physical memory to see how much RAM is recognized by the system.  RAM is really tricky.
