I used to work in a backwoods store. Most of the customers were poorly educated christians. Among that base, I noticed a very prominent dislike and distrust of "scientists". Believe me, I've heard the "those idiots think we came from monkeys" speech a million times. Even kids would say "scientists" like it was profanity, which they obviously got from their parents.
Politicians have smartly tapped into that resentment and turned it into a political issue. It's an easy way to actually get credit for backing big business interests.
The funny thing is, many of those same people will talk about how "the weather is getting hotter and hotter" every summer but immediately turn hostile if the word "climate" is introduced.
