Its not unreasonable to suggest FF13 will be a huge seller and boost the console. Theres no way this would take it past the Wii though, but then, that shouldnt be Sonys aim anymore |
The PS3 is specced ahead for its time (of course this is reflected on price/hardware losses). The PS3 could well outlast the PS2's lifecycle for many years, the PS2 will probably sell about 140 million, IMO Sony should aim to better this. But of course everything in due time, if the PS3 sold twice as many units as it did and the PS2 would have been discontinued IMO Sony would have been in serious financial problems. Once the hardware is cost reduced enough, bring on the mass market sales. |
Really, so when Sony decided to stick in a modified 7800GTX into the PS3, they were planning for it to last 10 years even if in 10 years, we'll be getting GPUs that could very well be 10 times stronger? |
So what? It's not like the PS2 or Wii is cutting edge technology nowadays or are they? The 8-core Cell + RSX + Blu-Ray drive + harddrive is a wonderfully powerful combination like how it's implemented in the PS3. There are going to be other more powerful systems during the PS3's lifecycle, but no specific configuration will come close in terms of install base as the PS3 will have and probably will not be able to compete with regard to pricing (of interest to games developers) Consoles are all about optimisation and learning to use the available technology as smart as possible, just look at God of War 2 for the PS2. I was a PC gamer and I can't remember a game this polished despite the PC's mcuh better specifications than the PS2. |
Yes, exactly and do you know why the PS2 survived all this time and is still surviving? Not because of its spec, but because of its massive popularity, something the PS3 is currently deficient in. Secondly, you're using the PS3's price as a reason to why game developers might be attracted to it? The Wii is always going to compete with the PS3 and it's always to be cheaper than the PS3 in price and development. When a generation moves forward, so will developers and the gap between next generation consoles will probably prevent devs from making a PS3 version. As you can see, the Wii is facing a similar problem from third parties and would have probably died already if not for that controller. The PS3 has no such advantage, especially given its current performance. You see any games currently being made for the original Xbox? You're saying that the PS3 is specced ahead of its time yet now you've admitted it will become severely obsolete by the time Nintendo and MS releases their next console. Oh yes, Far Cry came out in 2004 for the PC 2-3 years before the release of God of War 2 so I really don't know what you're talking about, not remembering any PC game that doesn't look as good. |
Sure the Wii (like the PS2) can be cheaper in price, but I was referring to higher specced systems. With regard to development it may well become much cheaper to develop for the PS3. For example due to using mature middle ware solutions, it's however also important what you aim for. It's easy to do a game which is as complex and looks like a Wii game, but due to the much higher specs many people will demand more impressive games on the PS3 (at least at full retail price). |
It's cheaper to develop for the PS2 now rather than the PS360 yet developers certainly aren't doing it and some have actually bled money making impressive looking games for the HD consoles. When the next generation starts and Sony decides to follow on with their ten year plan, they'll be in a situation where the PS3 isn't strong enough to handle future games so the games developed for it would probably be exclusives. That is something devs will be hesitant to do. You can optimize the PS3 all you want but in the end, the high spec consoles will always produce more technically impressive games which according to you, is what people want. The longevity of the PS3 doesn't depend on its specs like you think because compared to PCs, the thing was obsolete the day it came out (that's just an exaggeration, don't take it too seriously). Instead, the ten year plan depends on how successful it is and whether it's successful enough to withstand the onslaught of next generation consoles like the Wii. Right now, it doesn't appear to be so. As it stands, we are in a thread talking about whether X game can SAVE the PS3.
