Concerning whether or not they will continue the series on playstation or not - you gotta wonder if they'll do the same as Dragon Quest.
Which is to simplify (about DQ going to DS)
They're taking longer and longer to develop the games only to have the games sell the same amount.
Final Fantasy VII thru IX only had 1 to 2 years between release. The PS2s "true" Final Fantasies (X and XII - not counting spin-off or online) had 5 years between releases.
Sold roughly the same.
They've got to be thinking long and hard if they wanna keep doing it this way... spending that much more money and time to sell the same amount of games. They're not making one extra dime on all this extra work they're putting in the games. They're actually making a ton less dimes.
I, myself, would rather they simplify a bit for the sake of being able to play a quality, new Final Fantasy game more regularly.
