The margin for retailers on them was 50%. As someone said earlier. It was partly to appease retailers worried they would still hardware with tiny margins, then users would go fully digital leaving no cut for retailers.

 

Piracy was the other side. As much as it probably killed any mass market chances, the lack of piracy certainly seems to have helped with its software this last couple of years.

 

PS+ and PSN sales have made it a far cheaper console overall for a lot more content than the 3DS across their life spans for me though.
