Bad design choices... Alot of the components they picked didnt get cheaper over time.

Spending 100$ on the gamepad, which ment the wii u never went as low in price as nintendo wanted it to (because they refused to sell at loss).

But the root of all that is that they felt they had to do something new once again because they struck gold with the Wii. The Wiimote came about because they had a vision for a different kind of game and it was created out of necessity to accomplish that vision. The Wii U gamepad is the opposite, they came up with gamepad and then thought "Okay... now we gotta create games that use it..."
