You also need to buy new consoles to play the lastest console games. But the PC has the advantage of having PC games that actually still play on 10 year old PCs (unlike consoles).
Remember Audiosurf? 85% on Gamerankings this year, and it can be played on a 9 year old PC, on a PC that could be bought even before the PS2 came out.
My 5 year old PC can play Crysis (at lowest settings) with better looks than any console game that PS2/Xbox/DC could ever produce.
It's a wonder how people still say PC is dieing when they don't have any proof of it:
PC is dominant in Asia, and will make more revenue than all consoles combined within the next 3 years.
PC is the main platform in Europe, completely dominating several countries, and still being the top revenue maker in console oriented countries such as UK.
PC is making so much money online in the US, that they don't need to show how their retail market is.
