Incidentally, the name for this particular fruit (yes, people, it's a fruit) comes from the spanish name, "tomate", which is pronounced with a "mah" sound. It's "To-Ma-To" in Japanese katakana.
I suspect that Americans saw the "tomate" spanish spelling, and assumed it was pronounced "to-mayt" by analogy with the english word "mate". It would explain a lot.
