Though I haven't finished it yet(feels like I'm at the end of the first stage near the foreign ship), I just level up and kill some revenants with higher gear than me, then slowly explore the whole stage, you'll get there, and if you encounter a demon/yoki? defeat it and it won't respawn again even if you back track to the shrine or die. Just go at it slow and you'll eventually get to the end.
