Mormons have a second holy book apart from the Bible, the book of Mormon (released in 1827), which describes the events on the american continent during the biblical times and after - according to it the "lost tribes of isrealites" settled in america (long before Columbus), split into two groups and in a big war the religious Nephites were wiped out, while the heretic Lamanites won out and were punished by god with black skin > became the native americans
that conveniently makes the US another "holy land", it also says the reincarnated Jesus Christ visited the Nephites, while demonizing black ppl and native americans, so that murdering/enslaving them is less of an issue
it also preaches that men can become god-like, as god once was human
