It's not really though, it means "next" and "generation" which is fairly straight forward and obvious, we have iterative console cycles, "next generation" just means the next hardware product generally. What does "smart console" mean? That it has apps or expanded functionality like a phone? Well even the Vita has that, is that a "smart handheld?". Or is it that it somehow thinks for itself?

Not next gen to define gens themselves, but people were always talking about something LOOKING "next gen", which made no sense. being nothing ran at 1080p and 60fps the first year of Wii U was met with "It doesn't look Next Gen", then when the other consoles weren't really able to perform this task either Next Gen seemed to turn to a very grey area, meaning a ton of different things.
