Reducing the cost of your console while keep the specs relatively the same will help you sell more consoles. This lets you sell more games and more peripherals, which earns you more money (they don't make any money on the console). Making a more expensive console is not going to help them sell that many more consoles. And I don't think this would do much to way potential XBox buyers to the Sony camp. Someone please explain to me why Sony would spend time and money to develop a slightly faster console? How would any of this benefit Sony? Why wouldn't they just make a PS4 Slim unit, taking advantage of current technologies to make the console smaller / quieter / cheaper? The only real upgrade they should add is HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2, to support the current generation of 4K TVs (and some people have mentioned they should upgrade the Bluray drive to UHD capable, but I still have my doubts they would do this). |
Why would they do this...
Because they are on a x86 architecture allowing them unlimited backwards compatability of both games and the OS. Because Nintendo was planning on dropping a console mid generation that if what is rumored would cause the power split to favor NX. Because Xbox was/is planning on doing it, and they do not want to get caught with their dicks in their hands. Because they could milk more hardware revenue from people like me. And cause VR.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. I don't believe the Nintendo NX rumours, since launching a much more powerful console would make it much more expensive than the PS4 / XBox One, and with them having a 60+ million install base, the NX would be dead on arrival. Sony makes next to nothing from the console sale, so unless you start buying 2 of each game (one for each of your consoles), Sony would just lose money. You have a good point about VR, as a more powerful console would help it against the Rift and the Vive, but in my opinion that is still not worth it.
