Back in Ballmer era, his boundless lust for power, arrogance and greed scared to death every IT company that wasn't for all intents and purposes a MS vassal, so many unspokenly decided that it was vital for them that wherever MS hadn't seized yet a near-monopoly, they had to prevent it at all costs from ever getting it.
In a military clash, where supremacy is more risky and less granted and sure than the one given by huge amounts of money in economic wars, MS would eventually have ended up like clan Taira in ancient Japan.
