They cut so many characters from the book that they have no choice but to change things up (like Sansa taking Jeyne Poole's place).
Stannis was always just a distraction. It was only a matter of time.
Sansa's story started being different in season 4 so it isn't season 5 that really changed things.
What character do you have in mind when you say you don't like their direction?
