I have 720p TV and no complains, and adding to the whole "new gen = higher resolution" conversation, remember how the TV resolutions jumped between NES --> SNES --> Playstation --> Playstation 2 eras? Me neither, so after a huge jump from 480i to 720/1080p one should just be happy, anything higher than that only becomes useful in a much larger home theater screen.

Or if you sit closer... No reason to sit 10ft away if the game is 1080p. It's all about field of view, the higher the field of view the easier it is to get immersed in the game world. VR screens are only 5" after all :p I doubt 720p will be acceptable in VR, 1080p is already pushing it.

I do remember how TV resolutions jumped in the past. I had a CRT projector since the Playstation, yet it was also clear on a normal tv.
Gran Turismo hi-res mode was a nice preview of what was to come and playing Star Trek Voyager Elite Force in 800x600 on the projector was amazing at the time. (max that crt projector could display) The dreamcast had lovely sharp visuals making 4 player splitscreen re-volt possible to enjoy.

If people should just be happy, we would still be listening to radio and go to the theater :)
