There is plenty of good reasons for having externals.
Installed games and patches would not need to be uninstalled.
If you run out of space you simply just hook up another drive and swap between them to play other games.
You don't need to everytime you upgrade drive space run a system backup (meaning you need a further drive for the backup) and then reinstall it all again on the new drive.
