While the difficulty in actually making a PS2 with motion sensing work properly is obvious, what if they pulled it off? This idea that it would confuse gamers isn't necessarily a bad thing. It would confuse them as they see 2 consoles with motion games and one is 100 dollars while the other is 250.
In case Sony does this and actually supports it with the kind of game that the Wii is selling on to casuals (Wii Sports type stuff) then it could be a huge challenge to the Wii because in the end the Wii's success is primarily from casuals not Nintendo' fanbase and they will go for a cheaper motion enabled console if it is supported properly by party type games.
The idea that this will delay people adopting the PS3 doesn't apply in the case of the mass casual market because the PS3 price is way too far for them to go for it anyway (even if it came down to 500 or 450 dollars). So that shouldn't be an obstacle against going with a plan like this.
In reality though, I think the chances of this rumor coming true are very slim and the chances of it being done right are slim as well so this probably won't come to fruition.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!
