It does matter. That's one of the reason many people switch from the XBOX to PlayStation or Consoles to PC for better overall (and sometimes even handhelds to Smartphone).
However, is it essential ? Ofc not, infact. Some of the most beautiful game on PS4/XBOX1 ain't even 900/1080p. Take Quantum Break, The Order 1886 , Ryse Son of Rome and StarWar 2015 for example. Ofc, there are exception, such as inFAMOUS Second Son, this game is imho, a masterpiece in graphical department.
Personally, i prefer performance over resolution. But i do hope i can get both in console gaming.
PS4k/4.5 is my hope.
Tho, if it's a separated console then no thanks...
Oh and btw, Mario Kart 8 is 720/60fps, not 1080p/60fps. Smash is 1080/60fps tho i believe.
