I don't go to an Ivy-League, but I go to a peer institution of the less competitive Ivy's (Carnegie Mellon University.) I pay less than I would've if I went to my in-state school (Penn State) because private institutions have amazing financial aid packages, and the school I go to has the highest average salary for graduates of any school in the country.
Public institutions are great for certain people, Ivy's and their peer institutions are great for others. It depends who you are.
