But Microsoft's experience is a bit of a cautionary tale - if they'd had a full year+ to row back on the controversial elements of the reveal (followed by a re-reveal) rather than a couple of months then things may have turned out differently for them.

actually they didnt with Wii. Revolution, the Wii codename, was announced at E3 2005, 1.5 years before launch.

But people are also kind of forgetting that Xbox and Playstation are powerful name brands that don't need to gather hype as they sell very well on their own. Nintendo on the other hand....

And even with the Xbox 360 being the "hardcore gamers console of choice" last gen, it didn't stop it from mediocre sales. Having the time to address things, or being able to spread the word about a product isn't a bad thing.
