In Pokken, there's several aerial moves you can perform - however, when you're hit by an opponent's attack that sends you into the air, you can't do anything until falling to the ground. In Smash, if you're in the air, you're free to do any aerial option regardless of how you got into that position.

In Pokken, when you're knocked down, you're forced to do a normal getup and will never be punished for it. In Smash, when you're knocked down you can getup straight up, rolling backwards or forwards, or getup attack - and that's not even considering the possibility to tech -, and every option can be read and punished by your opponent too.

In Pokken, when you use a powerful move (which is not limited to synergy bursts), both you and your opponent have to watch the move take place through a very lengthy cutscene. In Smash, there are no cutscenes - nice moves are nice because they're hard to execute and hit with, and are done always during gameplay.

I could go on and on, but the point is: as much as I loved Pokken, it still doesn't nearly match up to Smash, which is nowadays the only fighting game that doesn't suffer from these issues. Smash is 100% pure fast-paced gameplay, with all players in full control of their characters and actions at all times, and that's why it's so good.

Conventional fighting games are stuck in their definitions. The perfect thing about Smash is that even if your at a high damage and by all account should be dead, you can still hang in there.

I'm a Peach main and I can regularly keep my self up to 200%+ damage in Melee. That's the equivalent of having negative HP in your street fighters or ur killer insticts, so really there is no comparison. The very fact that you can keep yourself alive through shreer willpower alone is unique to the series.

Obviously its an opinion on whatever you want, but the fact is that no other fighting game comes close to giving the player that much control, which is why I like it. Sure its fun to wail on some one with Ryu or Dormamu or Dante, but at the end of day the specatle is a huge part of it. I will say that Smash 4 is moving toward the specatcle as well but that's to be expected its a current gen game after all, but its still based in the fundamental do it yourself philosophy.

What is this willpower thing you're talking about? Skills?
