Tbh, I don't think it actually would benefit Sony.  I think opening it up to the PC Platform also opens Sony up to small-time indie ops, that may create something great (which Sony can then invest in/hire the individual/team).  It also opens the tech to researchers/scientists/insert occupation none of us can predict.  It ends up moving more units, than PS4 exclusivity.

That will or may be the case later on but not in the short term. As I said, this launch is aimed at current PS4 owners but at some point Sony would want it to help sell PS4s. They're not going to throw that away by offering it to the PC crowd earlier. Then you have the matter of PS4/PSVR exclusives. This is Sony PR as far as I'm concerned and designed to 'perhaps' stop some people buying into PC tech early on. They're hoping this will slow Rift/Vive sales until October.

Makes little sense honestly, especially for the researcher side of it.  PS4 isn't an open platform, PC is.

And none of us can really say with any certainty how many PC owners, who are interested in VR, would break down to buy a PS4 just for the VR experience.  Sony would also be potentially pissing off every single one of those individuals by coming out with the PC support later. (Aka a super dick move by Sony...and it would be).

If Sony wants to continue to build it's good faith w/ consumers, it'll release w/ PC support sooner, rather than later.  Otherwise it reeks of the Alan Wake debacle on the 360.

All that aside though, I do think their focus is going to be the PS4 platform for the time being, but I don't think it'd be that big of a deal to get PC support out into the world though, make the drivers open source, and let the community run with it.
