* hardware revsions split the user base - fact. * Hardware revisions will cause confusion outside of the hardcore user base. * In a market sold on uniform hardware, hardware revsions will cause the public to lose trust in Sony. * To newer PS4 owners, they are going to be really fucked off when they find that even though they just spent £250 on a PS4, had the waited a bit longer they could of had a much more powerful version. This is not expected in the console world, where machines are expected to have a certain life span. With phones its not so bad, because the upgrades are free. With consoles people are going to be pissed off with Sony, and that's not good for them. If Sony decide to going down this path, then I can see a lot of people that use PS4 as their primary machine, jumping ship to Nintendo. These are the four things that will happen should a more powerful PS4 get released. Your telling me that all of this is better than releasing disc games as normal but including a higher spec version of the game as a streamed version? Either as a cross buy or a pay wall? There is no way on earth that adding a PS Now option is WORSE than going down the new hardware road. Only a total mad man would think otherwise. |
I think all of the possible downsides you are bringing up are valid for both new hardware revision as well as for making exclusive higher performing games on ps now. I think that would actually be a lot worse because some people would have no option at all to get those games (slower connections, far from the servers, etc). We are talking purely hypothetically here so it won't amount to much anyway.
I see you really seem to enjoy the PS Now service and that's all good, but in my mind PS Now is not even a service that should be aimed at playstation owners. It makes so much more sense to open it up for people who have no playstation but would like to play games every once in a while. Bring it to Smart TVs, bring it to tablets, to low power laptops, etc.
What sense would it make to playstation fans that some random guy that doesn't even own a playstation to be playing a better version of uncharted than all the people who were there 1st day supporting the hardware?
It seems like you need to pull back and get some perspective on this whole thing. Again, I pointed out the very possible problems with a new upgraded model of the PS4 but I also included my views in how Sony could solve those problems.
I find it a dead mistake to actually split the userbase by having some games exclusive to some people, and the same goes for people who would like the better model should be able to trade in the older one with good value.
Solving those 2 issues I believe everyone (or almost everyone) would be happy.
Another thing you didn't address is the VR side of it which Sony is banking a whole lot. Latency is a decisive factor in VR and there's 0% chance PS Now could power a VR game without people throwing up after 3/5 minutes.
Please, go back to my 2nd post in this thread and tell me if you disagree with any of the points I made and why.
