Cruyff was one of the best football players of the 20th century.
I guess no VGC member saw him live in stadium or on TV when he was still active as he retired in 1984, but I followed the rise of Barcelona to European fame in the late 80s and 90s under Cruyff as coach (rivaled and ultimately overshadow by AC Milan under Sacchi and Capello).
The late 80s to mid-90s was generally a great time for Dutch football. Finally European champion in 1988, Cruyff a top and influential coach in Barcelona, van Basten/Gullitt/LamaRijkard at Milan, Ajax internationally successful again and almost as strong as in the mid-70s when Cruyff led them to three consecutive European Cup wins.
An outstanding player and coach, an outspoken man.
