It depends on what you mean by 'FEEL the extent of the events of the game's world.'
My first visceral reaction to a game was when I was playing Valhalla on my old, rubber padded, Spectrum ZX back in the early 80s. I was getting really frustrated at my slow progress in gathering the required mythical objects and, in exasperation, I typed a swear word in my in game instruction. The game's response was to inform me that 'Mary is not amused' and a dwarf ran onto the screen and punched my character. As perverse as it may sound, that is the precise moment I knew I would be hooked on video games for life.
