Well RPG stands for ROLE PLAYING GAME (which everybody already knows) so it's basically saying you will be role playing something. The game has to make you feel like you're in that world, as if it's a second life you have. That's why stats and levels are in there to make you feel like you're getting stronger like you do in real life as well as adding more complexity to the game.
There has to be choices and repercussions from them choices (just like in real life) there has to be the feature to buy/loot or find new cothes/gear to wear just as you would in real life if you were in that situation. Good RPGs will also make you enjoy and like the characters it should make you feel for them and get a connection. Remember we're supposed to be Role Playing.
