The PSVR is actually better in quality than the ORift imo. It supports up to 120HZ refresh rate ORift only 90Hz, so you cant say one is better than the other if it has specs who are below PSVR. What Sony said themselfs was actually wrong.

Its common fact that a Hardware company can produce cheaper and better quality Hardware than a software/webbrows company, ORift was funded with Kickstarter too. VR devices have also a lot of Optical things in it, which Sony is known with making Cameras etc.

 The OR has the better hardware when it comes to lenses (not sure about that one but the lenses are superior to the Vive lenses) and audio ,also it has 2 screens instead of one.  Which is great for IPD it has a bigger FOV an IPD Slider. Also Resolution is higher in the Oculus. (even though PS VR has full RGB Oled for each pixel). 

Sony made an incredible headset for an incredible price. However even they know that it is inferior to the Rift (strictly speaking about the Hardware.)  I thinkm the main issue is that PS VR has just a single screen and Oculus has two built in which has certain advantages for VR.
