Indeed but did it have a lengthy history in 2d gaming like Mario did at the time of SM64? Again, the industry was transitioning to 3d at the time and there's just something so symbolic that a franchise once so married to 2d was able to pull off 3d so well. Almost felt like it was setting the example for other 2d franchises to follow suit.

Duke Nukem 3D then? :) It wasn't true 3D yet a damn fine transition.
GTA 3 is the best 2D to 3D transition next to Prince of persia but that took another gen.

But I admit, I did buy the 64 on seeing Mario in 3D on it. Good thing it had many more great games on it.
