I would start a housing project with big shared rooftop gardens. I would want to reach an equal admixture of elderly, families with kids, students, rich yuppies and people dependant on benefits.
There would be vegetable gardens and greenhouses to take care of together. The kids could learn about plants and animals and growing their own crop and actually have places to play in and the adults would get healthy food from direcly in front of their door.
I would also push for more trees in the streets, broader walkways and more life on the streets in general. Also I would build nice, retro styled houses if I got the chance. The stain steel and glass cubes they build nowadays are a pet peeve of mine.
I realize that this sounds like the most hippie Idea ever and that there is a big probablility that it wouldn't work out, but I want to be able to improve overall quality of life i my city and nature and community is always a good start to that.
