Well, the Japanese versions of Lelouch was known for his very sinister voice, and the contrast to his soothing nonchalant tone. Something JYB wasn't able to portray in the English dub. When Rivalz for example teases Lelouch about watching Kallen, in the Jp version he responds in a nonchalant way, as if he it doesn't phase him in the slightest. And we get the sense that he has more important things on his mind, while Rivalz notices that Lelouch didn't fall to his provication. But in the English version, JYB responds in a serious tone, as if he's trying to convince Rizalz that he got the wrong idea. As if he cares, and doesn't have more important things to worry about. Throughout the series we got the sense that Lelouch was rather nonchalant around women. For example, when Kallen got embarassed for being in a bunny costume, or when she took the phone from him while she was in the shower. So JYB's portrayal of Lelouch in that regard clashes with that. And his 'sinister' voice is either emotionless, or angry. He is one of my favorite English voice actors, and he suits characters like Guy from Tales of The Abyss very well, but his voice acting isn't particularly ranged, so to portray a very multi layered character like Lelouch doesn't really suit him, even though he has a nice voice. |
What is your opinion of JYB in durarara? He is quite sinister in that show :). I definitely prefer JYB to play characters like Ichigo in Bleach, but sometimes his performance on other roles impress me.
As for Nunally, I honestly dislike pretty much all female VAs. There are a few that can be good like Colleen Clinkenbeard. But half the VAs chosen are mismatched for the english versions.
Been a fan of Crispin, JYB, Steven Blum since I saw Wolf's Rain Dub on Adult Swim so many years ago.
