I am sure VR is not going to be the replacement for smartphones. However it does not have to be an addon. Google is building a standalone HMD untethered and with its own processing power on board.
Positional tracking for mobile HMDs will allow people to use the whole world as a tracked space and the possibilities would be endless for this kind of device.
That said its not going to replace a Smartphone as it has nothing in common with it.
