Isaac Asimov's "The Dead Past" from 1956 about a chronoscope (a device which allows direct observation of past events) is one of my favorite short stories ever! I recommend it to everyone!

Have you read "The Light of Other Days"? Novel based on the same concept. (Of course Asimov did it first, he does everything first)
